Who makes the shirts?

Check out our team section to see who is involved.

When I buy a shirt how does it affect the people in Kenya?

Every shirt sold not only supports the tailors of Kiteghe village by improving their skills but also supports the environment through the Malewa Trust tree planting initiative. By offering tailoring jobs and an outside market for the products we are creating a sustainable source of income to people living in this remote area of Kenya.  You are giving these tailors a chance to support their children's education and improve their livelihoods.

For more info check out our story.

What are the shirts made of?

The shirts are made of a traditional East African cloth called the 'Kanga' or 'Leso',  made from 100% cotton. You can read about the history of this fabric here. Every Monday new Kanga prints hit the shops of Biashara street in Mombasa and are bought wholesale by traders who sell them all over Kenya. In order to make our shirts we have to be sure not to miss the weekly rush to buy the latest designs because they are printed only once and the same design will never be reproduced again!! These make Kanga shirts very unique. We are also looking at diversifying our collections by using other traditional African fabrics like Kikoy, Maasai Shuka, West African wax print and much more...

The kanga fabric is 100% cotton and the colours in the fabric tend to run. This is something we can’t avoid but to help reduce the loss of colour please follow the guidelines below.

TRADITIONAL CARE: Traditionally when locals buy kanga’s they dip them in the salty sea to help the colour fasten. So, why not bring your shirt to the beach and give it a wash.

SALT: No beach nearby, then we recommend rinsing it in a bucket of cold salt water, as this will help the colour fasten.

WASHING: Please be careful, wash your shirt separately in COLD water.

Remember your shirt will get softer the more it’s loved, worn and washed.
